[Also in Division C2] In a process for removing water from a liquid mixture in an autoclave 1 by azeotropic distillation with an immiscible entrainer, such as benzene, the vapours rise through tube 2 into a steel Soxhlet extractor 3 and condense on steel cooling coil 4. The moist condensate is dried by molecular sieve 5, and the dry condensate returns through siphon 6 to the autoclave 1. With valve 11 closed, the dried condensate flows back discontinuously; but when valve 11 is open, the dried condensate flows back continuously. The sieve may consist of alkali aluminium silicate, the pore diameter being 3A. The production of alkyl esters of pyridine carboxylic acids is described (see Division C2). |
