A polyamide having good impact strength and elongation is prepd. by polymg. an w-lactam in the presence of an alkali catalyst, a polyfunctional cocatalyst, and a polyoxyalkylene amine. Thus, a mixt. of 200 g polyoxypropylene diamine and 20.9 g TDI was added to a mixt. of 5 g MeONa and 800 kg melted E-caprolactam. The mixt. was heated at 160≦̸C to give a polymer having elongation at break 280≦̸C and notched 1zod impact strength 23.0 kg.cm/cm, compared with 22% and 3.9 kg.cm/ cm, resp., without I.
