In this separate piston chambers are provided for the air or fuel mixture intake and compression strokes and for the expansion and combustion gas exhaust strokes. These chambers are connected to one another by way of a combustion chamber which can be closed off from the two different piston chambers on the working stroke. In each of the two piston chambers a rotary piston is provided with an outer circumference corresponding to the proposed working sequence the piston circumference and piston chamber respectively forming variable working chambers during the rotation of the piston. Both rotary pistons are seated on a common uncranked engine shaft. In order to increase the efficiency and to obtain a more compact construction, the compression chamber formed by the slide in the first piston chamber and one bearing on the piston circumference and the slide provided for delimitation is connected, in each case by way of an overflow aperture, closable by means of a time-controlled valve disc, and a separate combustion chamber to two working chambers, which lie on both sides of the compression chamber viewed in the axial direction of the engine shaft. The slide cross section is triangular with bow action counter to the piston direction of rotation.
