A process for regenerating a nitrate-laden anion exchanger comprises leading a regeneration liq. through the nitrate-charged anion exchanger and passing the effluent regeneration liq. through a denitrification reactor in which denitrifying microorganisms convert the nitrate present in the regeneration liq. into N2 gas, and the resulting soln. from which the nitrate ion has been wholly or partially removed is re-used for regeneration of the nitrate-laden ion exchanger. Specifically claimed are an electron donor such as H2 gas or sulphide ion, and a carbon source such as an oxidisable organic cpd. such as methanol, ethanol, an acetate or glucose, both of which may be added. The treatment may be carried out in a fixed bed reactor or a fluidised bed reactor with or without a carrier material. The denitrifying bacteria may be mounted in a polymer matrix. Pref. the concn. of the regeneration soln. is maintained, by the addn. of anions. |
