The invention relates to a method for reducing the residual stresses of roller-straightened rails. After straightening, the web of the rails is heated briefly to temperatures of 200-700 DEG C, preferably 350-500 DEG C, and after reaching the desired temperature, cools to room temperature in air. For the purpose of heating, the rail is moved continuously past the heating device. The measure according to the invention reduces the residual tensile stresses in the rail head and foot to below 50 N/mm<2>, resulting in an increased fracture resistance of the rail.
