The protection device is intended for prime movers having an auxiliary circuit and having sensors which are intended for monitoring predetermined limits of operating conditions and connect electrical switching elements to earth in the event of a limit being exceeded. It has a switching element which is open when live, a switching element which is closed when live and a time switching element, the switching loop for the switching element which is open when it is live being connected to the sensors, and the time switching element being arranged in the switching loop of the switching element which is closed when it is live.
