Winning tools, for example on cutting heads of heading machines in underground mining and tunnelling, are cooled in order to avoid the risk of igniting firedamp, the cooling medium being controllable and being fed specifically to cutter and rock. Provision is made according to the invention for chilled liquefied gases or gas mixtures, such as, for example, air, oxygen or inert gases, to be used as the cooling medium.
