The invention relates to a device for ensuring the safety of the staff tasked with putting tarpaulins on or taking tarpaulins off flatbed vehicles. This device comprises a cable 6 stretched between the front and rear ends of the flat bed of the vehicle, a fastening means connected to a harness 8 intended to be worn by the user, this fastening means 7 being capable of sliding along the cable, and means 4, 5 for moving the cable between a rest position, where it is within the vehicle loading volume, and a working position, where it is situated approximately in the axial plane of the vehicle, at a height above the ground exceeding that of the top of the tarpaulin. <IMAGE>
