Hydrostatic forces are used to relieve the pressure on the screws of a mill roll gap screwdown. Two pistons are housed in a cylinder, one of them a ring piston fitting round the protruding shaft of the other. The chambers formed between the pistons and between the other ends of these pistons and the housing are connected in such a manner that admission of oil to the lower side of the ring piston causes the two piston shafts t lock on to the roll bearing, and the weight of this is then balanced by the pressure in the system. The screwdown spindle works in the upper part of the same housing and its lower end reaches into the chamber above the main piston. In the equilibrium position, movement of the other is automatically followed by movement of the other two pistons together, without any pressure being put on the screwdown mechanism.
|
