A paper tape punch has an actuating mechanism that is precisely synchronised to the tape feed motion. A motor causes a crank (6) to rotate causing a coupled link to undergo a pivoting motion. A carrier arm has a fixed pivot point (10) at one end and a pivot (11) to the control link at the other. An electromagnetic solenoid (12) is secured to the carrier and interacts with the operating bar (13) that transmits motion to the tape punch (1). The bar is spring biased (16) against a fixed stop (15). A sensor (23) monitors the crank position and provides an input to control a switch (19) to energise the solenoid at a specific point this causes the bar to impact against the punch when the tape is correctly positioned.
