A device for printing patterns of bars (4) on a ticket comprises a row of longitudinally movable rods (10) with printing faces (11) at their one ends, the rods being moved by solenoids (16) through the intermediary of force multipliers comprising pivoted levers (12) acting on their other ends. Solenoids for successive rods are on opposite sides of the row. The patterns of bars may form symbols in 'clear' as well as bar-coded information. The device may be used in apparatus for use with a multi-ticket system employing tickets bearing machine-readable information. The apparatus has a reader (24), which reads information from a first ticket inserted through an inlet (29) before the ticket is diverted to a shredder (25). The apparatus also includes a printer (23) which prints a replacement ticket from a magazine (21) and delivers it to an outlet (27), after the reader has checked what is printed on it. The information on the replacement ticket is dependent on the information read from the first ticket.
