The proposed method uses a gyroscope for determining a course and a displacement pick-up for measuring the distance travelled. A compound navigation calculation can be used to determine the location of a vehicle starting from a starting point. To determine the unknown drift of the gyroscope, an additional compound navigation calculation is carried out with a known drift and when a known position location (geodatic point) is reached, the unknown drift is determined by comparing the calculated position data. Furthermore, proportionality factors are formed which represent the reliability of the unknown drift and the distance measurement determined in accordance with the structure of the distance travelled (circular travel, straigh-ahead travel and so forth). The proportionality factors are also used for calculating the correction values for the course angle and the drift compensation.
