Grinding unit for providing conical mouth openings and/or stopper sections on glass bodies, for example hollow vessels having stoppers engaging in one another in the form of a conical nipple, pipelines and the like. The grinding unit is designed for rapid, precise and dimensionally accurate grinding of conical surfaces having a high degree of precision and surface finish such that a plurality of grinding tools are arranged spaced apart one after the other along a defined path on a unit frame and, progressing in this sequence, their grinding surfaces exhibit a decreasing grain size or roughness, and such that, on the unit frame, a movably guided element holder for receiving at least one glass element is provided. Said element holder can be moved step-by-step along the defined path from one grinding tool to the next grinding tool into the machining position, in each of which either the respective grinding tool and the glass element are guided movably towards one another and brought into grinding contact or one of the two is guided movably towards the other and thus brought into grinding contact.
