These compounds and other aryloxy-substituted benzenedicarboxylic acid nitriles and esters may be prepared by reacting, in the presence of a dipolar aprotic solvent, a mixture comprising (1) a compound of the general formula wherein the NO 2 group in (III) is adjacent to a Z radical, and (2) an alkali metal salt (x) of the formula R-O-Alk or (y) of the general formula Alk-O-R1-O-Alk, wherein R is a substituted or unsubstituted monovalent aromatic or heteroaromatic radical, R1 is a substituted or unsubstituted divalent aromatic or heteroaromatic radical and Z and R11 are as defined above.
