The switching point has an insulator, which is located in the open air, of essentially hollow-cylindrical construction. Located in the internal space of the insulator, which is filled with insulating means, are two switching elements (4, 5) which can move relative to one another along the axis of the insulator. The electric field which is present during switching off in the separating path (6) between the two switching elements (4, 5) is intended to be kept as low as possible, using simple means, on the outer surface which is exposed to the air. This is achieved in that the insulator is constructed from two insulating bodies. One (1) of these insulating bodies is constructed as a hollow-cylindrical supporting body. This insulating body (1) supports the other of the two insulating bodies on its outer envelope surface, in the region of the separating path (6). This other insulating body surrounds the separating path (6) in an annular form (attachment 9, cavity 10) and has a higher dielectric strength than air. <IMAGE>
