PURPOSE:To obtain a plate variable color electric discharge lamp with high luminous flux and high efficiency by fixing phosphors with different luminescent colors to independent discharge paths formed by partitioning the airtight space and providing an ignition controller which controls the emission of each discharge path. CONSTITUTION:The upper and the lower surfaces of each of three discharge paths 3a, 3b and 3c are coated with a phosphor with a different luminescent color. For example, the discharge path 3a is coated with a red phosphor, the discharge path 3b is coated with a green phosphor and the discharge path 3c is coated with a blue phosphor. When a d.c. power supply (DC) is turned on, a selection changeover switch (SW) is cyclically switched to the discharge paths 3a, 3b and 3c according to duty. Continuous and constant emission of each color can be produced and stable electric discharge is performed by increasing the frequency of switching of the selection changeover switch (SW). Furthermore, red, green and blue colors can be freely produced in triangular chromaticity spaces by properly selecting the duty ratio. |
