In the case of a process and an apparatus for dehumidification, in particular in small rooms, boats, caravans and the like, refrigerant is evaporated, compressed, re-liquefied and expanded in a refrigerant circuit, the process being carried out at least periodically in a temperature range in which the temperatures at the evaporator (14) drop below the freezing point, so that the precipitated water is deposited as frost or ice on the evaporator (14), and thawing operations being performed from time to time by means of a thawing device in order to thaw any ice which may have been deposited on the evaporator (14). In order to keep the evaporator (14) as free from ice as possible at all times, it is envisaged that a check as to whether the evaporator is iced takes place and, if there is ice on the evaporator, thawing is carried out each time switching off takes place. <IMAGE>
