PURPOSE:To obtain a formed article of porous chitin, having high mechanical strength and water-absorptivity, and suitable as a hemostatic agent, adsorbent, etc., by mixing a chitin dope with a water-soluble polymer to effect the coagulation of the dope and treating the product with an aqueous solution. CONSTITUTION:Chitin [poly-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (derivative)] is dissolved in a solvent (e.g. a mixture of trichloroacetic acid and a chlorinated hydrocarbon) to obtain a dope having a concentration of <=20(wt)%, preferably 0.5-5%. The dope is coagulated by mixing with a water-soluble polymer which is solid at normal temperature (e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, agar, etc.) at a weight ratio (chitin dope/polymer) of 1/5-5/1. The coagulated material is treated with an aqueous solution to remove the water-soluble polymer therefrom. The obtained porous chitin has a porosity of >=90% in dry state and a wet strength of >=1g/mm.<2>. |
