A flexible membrane is located within or on a refractory body used in molten metal handling. Membrane is impermeable to gas and is mfd. from refractory material compatible with the body. Pref. membrane materials are alumina, alumina/graphite, carbon/graphite, BN, Si3N4 and esp. graphite. Cylindrical membrane mfd. from graphite sheet or strip is pref. situated within the body. Membrane is supported or suspended in a mould and packed around with refractory powder. Mould is isostatically pressed to form body contg. member in predetermined position. (body is dired dried and fired.). |
