Considerable improvement in the mechanical strength properties of a paper, both in the dry state and in the wet or moist state, and in its resistance to water and moisture. The paper has incorporated in it, in its bulk or in the form of a surface coating, 1 a higher fatty acid or one of its salts and/or a wax of the hydrocarbon type and 2 a hydrophilic polymer containing hydroxyl radicals; 1 is advantageously potassium stearate and 2 is a gelatinised starch, preferably a mixture of gelatinised maize, millet and rice starches. Possibility of incorporating recycled waste paper into paper pulp and economical production of papers or cardboards which can be employed for very varied applications (in particular newsprint, wrapping, bags, containers).
