The float employs an iron plate (11) for concentrating the magnetic field, with a permanent magnet (13,14) attached to it on each side. The permanent magnets (13,14) have opposing polarities each being polarised in a direction concentric to the float axis. The peripheral edge of the iron plate (11) is pref. welded to the inside wall of the cylindrical float housing (5) of non-magnetisable fine steel. The float (5) is pref. weighted so that the iron plate lies at the liquid level.
