An apparatus is described for measuring the deformation properties, especially the hardness, of cigarettes (14), in which apparatus a cigarette (19) held in a mouthpiece (22) of a smoking machine (20) is subjected to pressure from two different sides by a calliper (23) having a pressure member (5), the calliper which consists of two legs (3, 4) arranged on a common motor shaft (6), being capable of being moved together or apart by means of a right/left-handed thread of the motor shaft. In the transporting of the cigarette to the smoking machine, the two legs (3, 4) of the calliper (23) are brought into a raised position by the same drive motor (1). <IMAGE>
