A storage and transportation container for radioactive materials comprises a composite wall consisting, from the inside outwards, of an inner wall, an intermediate layer of dense material, e.g. lead, and an outer wall; a number of cavities or chambers sub-divided by internal partitions is distributed about the axis of the container, a portion of these cavities being filled with a metal lighter than lead. Pref., a layer of a material such as mortar or cement having an aqueous binding agent is inserted between the outer wall and the layer of dense material. This is pref. an aluminous cement. Design provides adequate shielding for the contents, combined with suitable means for rejecting the heat produced.
