A circuit (3) generates an acoustic-frequency signal related to a particular locomotive, and transmits the signal to the locomotive via conductors (21, 2, 22) that include the drive voltage supply conductors of the locomotive. A unit (4) carried by the locomotive includes a loudspeaker (7) and a synchroniser (5) which emits pulses in time with the rotation of the locomotive wheels. The pulses are transmitted via the conductors (21, 2, 22) to the circuit (3). In response to every pulse or to every nth pulse, the circuit transmits the acoustic-frequency signal to the locomotive.
