The connecting rod (1) of a reciprocating internal combustion engine transfers the force acting on the piston (3) to a crankshaft (5) through a bearing assembly in the big end. - The big end bearing consists of a set of rollers or needle rollers (11) located laterally either by the lips of a hollowed out track in the big end shells (1',1'') or by flange plates fixed to the connecting rod and crankshaft. The wear resistance of the bearing tracks is improved by nitriding or a similar surface treatment.
