A circular recombinant DNA compound of formula I

wherein the repeated alphabetic sequences (the number of repetitions of which is arbitrarily depicted in said formula) therein represent the following:
the <> region comprises nucleotides whose sequence contains a bGH polyadenylation signal;
the <> region comprises the nucleotides whose ordered codons represent a gene for the synthesis of a pre-selected polypeptide other than bGH, including genomic and other intron containing forms thereof;
the <

> region comprises a nucleotide whose sequence contains a promoter capable of initiating transcription of said gene, and
the <> region comprises optional nucleotides whose sequence contains a selectable marker which, upon incorporation of said DNA compound into the expressed genetic material of a living cell, can be utilized to select a cell in which incorporation has taken place; and the acircular forins thereof are disclosed together with cells and cell lines incorporating these DNA compounds in the expressed genetic material. The cells and cell lines are then capable of producing the pre-selected polypeptides, such as tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) in high yield.
