The plasticisation chamber of an extruder or injection moulding machine for processing plastics materials is heated by a series of coaxial windings (11,12,13) for induction heating using a frequency in the range 1 to 50 kHz. The temp. is controlled by adjusting the power supply to the h.f. generator (A) through a control unit (C) which receives temp. readings from sensors (14,15,16) at intervals along the barrel.
