Colorimetric detection of an alcohol in a hydrocarbon.

The detection method comprises contacting the hydrocarbon with a mixture comprising: i. an alcohol-soluble, hydrocarbon-insoluble dye; and ii. a solid which is insoluble in the hydrocarbon and alcohol, whereby the mixture undergoes a color change in the presence of alcohol. The hydrocarbon sample preferably is contacted with a drying agent to remove dissolved water prior to contacting the mixture. The method is suited, for example, to the detection of an alcohol in a hydrocarbon fuel, more especially a gasoline. Preferred solids are Group IIA metal salts, preferably calcium carbonate. A preferred dye is hexamethyl p- rosaniline chloride.
