<p>A sliding roof for a motor vehicle has a rigid roof panel (20) closing an opening in the vehicle roof (14) and which can be opened either by sliding the panel (20) below the opening or by pivoting the panel (20) about a transverse horizontal axis adjacent to its front edge to raise the rear edge of the panel (20) above the vehicle roof (14). The rear edge of the panel (20) is supported at each side on a guide shoe (114) which is connected to the roof panel (20) by two links (118, 120), the connection between the two links being arranged to permit relative angular movement over a limited range between an orientation such that the links (118, 120) are horizontal and in line with each other and an orientation such that the links (118, 120) are at an obtuse angle to each other and project above the guide track (26). Catch means (128) are arranged to retain the links (118, 120) at said obtuse angle to each other and release means (140) are operative to cause disengagement of the catch means (128) when the angle between the track (26) and the link (118) nearer to the guide shoe (114) is less than a predetermined magnitude.</p> |
