Pneumatic refining of steel using calcium carbide fuel

Subsurface pneumatic refining is carried out using CaC2 to provide heat by: providing a bath having dissolved oxidisable components to provide sufficient acidic material when oxidised to flux the CaC2 oxidn. prods., adding CaC2 to the melt; supplying O2 at a rate such that the period that the bath contains both the oxidisable components and the CaC2 does not exceed 5 mins., and oxidising the CaC2 to provide heat for the melt.
