A crystalline, potassium contg. zeolite having a (Si,Ge)O2 to (Al,Ga)2O3 ratio of 3-7 and an X-ray diffraction pattern corresp. to that known for zeolite L is synthesises by (a) preparing a reaction mixt. of water, a source of silica or germania, a source of alumina or gallia, a tetraalkylammonium salt where two of the alkyl gps. are 1-4C and the other two alkyl gps. are at least 2C, a source of potassium, and up to 40 mol.% of sodium based on total sodium and potassium, the mixt. have the mole ratio compsn. (M,R)2O : (Al,Ga)2O3 1.4-4; (Si,Ge)2O : (Al,Ga)2O3 2.5-15; H2O : (Al,Ga)2O3 90-200; R2O:M2O 0.05-0.5; where M is K or K + Na, and R is the tetraalkylammonium cation above; and (b) maintaining the reaction mixt., while homogeneous, at 70-260 deg.C, for 1-10 days until crystals of zeolite are formed.
