Cpds. of formula (I) are prepd. by reacting a 3-phenoxybenzoic acid of the formula (II) with ethylene or propylene carbonate (III) at 90-125 deg.C in the presence of a catalyst. In the formulae, X is O or S; G is NO2, halo, CN or H; L, M and N are each halo, trihaloalkyl, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or H and one of B' or B is H and the other is methyl. - Suitable catalysts include tetraethylammonium iodide. The solvent may be toluene, chlorobenzene or DMF or may be absent. - (I) are insecticides, antimicrobial agents and herbicides. The process does not produce polyethoxylated prods. or the ethylene bis esters. (0/0)
