Method and tools for increasing the inside width of a chimney 1, for example, for cleaning chimneys, combustion chambers, boilers and the like, which is covered by deposits 2 on the inner surfaces, like tar deposits, by means of impact of chains. The tool is equipped with a holder 4 that lies on the end of a rotating rod 6 in which the holder has chain parts 5 attached, consisting of single, elongated chain links which are arranged so that chains 5 lie on several layers perpendicular to the axis of rotation and are secured. In this way many impacts are produced at one point when the chains are held on their paths by the adjacent chains, in which much more effective and faster cleaning of the chimney is produced. The method and tool can also be used to increase an opening relative to the original opening, whereupon a chimney lining 19 can be introduced. <IMAGE>
