Cis-1,4-polybutadiene by polymerization of butadiene (BD) in the absence of significant amts. of solvent using as catalyst a mixt., in an inert hydrocarbon, of neodymium cpds. (I); OH and COOH contg. cpds. (II); halogenated cpds. (III); and organo-aluminium cpds. (IV) including relative hydride derivs. - (I) is Nd oxide, alcoholate, phenate and carboxylate; (II) is from alcohols, phenols and carboxylic acids, opt. with addn. of water; (III) are sec. or tert. alkyl halides, aryl or aralkyl halides, organic acid halides, metal or organometal halides, hydrogen halide acids and halogens. - Amts. of (I) and (II) are such that OH gps. (including water) + COOH gps. : Nd = 2-100:1 (pref. 3-30:1); Al:Nd atom ratio is 20-200:1 (pref. 25-80:1); and halogen : Nd is 0.2-3:1 (pref. 1-2:1). The catalyst and liq. BD, opt. pre-mixed, in ratio 4.104-4.105 moles. BD per g.atom Nd, are passed under plug-flow conditions through an elongated reactor (inlet above 30 deg.C. to outlet below 130 deg.C.; pref. 50-60 to 80-100) controlling the temp. by partial evapn. of BD to provide a mixt. contg. 25-70 wt.% polymer emerging from the outlet.
|
