PURPOSE:To enable the highly-precise measurement of the outside diameter of a substance when it is rolled up, by a method wherein the substance is rolled up around a roll core from the side of a drive roll and the outside diameter of the substance is calculated from the ratio in the number of revolutions between the drive roll and the roll core. CONSTITUTION:While the number N1 of pulses generated in one rotation of a roll core 1 is counted by a rotation detector 12, the number N2 of pulses generated by a rotation detector 13 connected to a drive roll 2 is counted. When the outside diameter D of the drive roll 2 is denoted by D, the outside diameter (d) of paper rolled around the roll core 3 is expressed by d=DXN1/N2. The outside diameter D being fixed, the outside diameter (d) is measured by calculating the results of measurement of the numbers N1 and N2 of the pulses from the detectors 12 and 13 by means of an arithmetic unit 14. According to this method, a change in the outside diameter of paper or the like when it is rolled up can be calculated in an in-process manner by a simple structure. |
