1-Ethyl 6-fluoro 1,4-dihydro 7-(1-piperazinyl)4-oxo quinoline 3-carboxylic acid of formula (I) is made by reaction of the ethyl ester of 7-amino 1-ethyl 6-fluoro 1,4-dihydro 4-oxo quinoline 3-carboxylic acid of formula (II) with excess bis-2-chloroethyl amine in an inert solvent, e.g. dimethyl formamide or dimethyl sulphoxide, followed by hydrolysis of the ester with dilute caustic soda and pptn. of the acid with acetic acid.
