An arrangement for stabilizing the attitude of carrier units 168, 174, 175, 179, 176, 177, pivotally attached between endless chains 169 of an endless conveyer comprises a toothed sprocket 162 non-rotatably secured to each end of each unit. The sprockets each engage a stabilizing endless chain 160 which moves at the same speed as the conveyer chains 169 over the linear runs, but which moves at a faster speed than the chains 169 in the arcuate portions. The sprockets 162 and carrier units are therefore rotated relative to the conveyer chains in the arcuate sections to maintain the attitude of the units constant. The stabilizing chains 160 co-extend with the conveyer chains 169 and pass around end sprockets coaxial with but of smaller diameter than the end sprockets of the conveyer. Each of the stabilizer chains 160 comprises two chains secured together such that one passes around the end sprockets and one engages the sprockets 162 on the carrier units. In the embodiment of Fig. 4, the conveyer chain sprockets are motor-driven through a chain 132 and the carrier unit sprockets 162 drive the stabilizing chains 160 along the linear sections thereof. Rollers 180, 180a on the carriers engage fixed tracks 182, 182a along these linear runs to prevent the carriers turning due to engagement with the stabilizer chains. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), a separate motor drive is applied to the stabilizer chains. |
