The invention relates to a non-return valve (2) for pipe conduits (3,4) filled with liquid. The non-return valves are intended to close off the connected pipe conduits automatically when the direction of flow is reversed. In the case of rapid flows of liquid or high pressure differences, significant pressure shocks or "water hammer", endangering the pipe conduit, can occur. To avoid such pressure shocks, the invention provides that, in a valve with a damping piston (10) displaceable in a separate damping cylinder (6), at least one pressure-compensating channel (13 to 16, 20 to 23) is let into the wall of the damping cylinder, connecting the volumes above and below the damping piston and providing the damping piston with at least one further outflow channel (19, 24, 25), of relatively small cross-section, connecting the subspaces on both sides of the damping piston in the range of the closed position of the valve. The invention furthermore provides that the outflow channel (24, 25) be a narrow continuation of an opening (20, 22) in the wall of the damping cylinder, the said continuation extending to below the bottom edge of the damping piston in the closed position of the valve. A non-return valve according to the invention is suitable, in particular, for use in power stations. <IMAGE>
