An aromatic carbonate process comprises contacting under anhydrous conditions a phenol, carbon monoxide, a base, a Gp. VIIIB element and an oxidant having an oxidn. potential, greater than that of the Gp. VIIIB element. The Gp. VIIIB element is Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir or Pt. The process can form an aromatic polycarbonate from a polyphenol or an aromatic monocarbonate from a mono-phenol. The phenol, is pref. phenol, p-cumylphenol or transphenol A. The base is pref. a tertiary amine, e.g. 2,2,6,6, N-pentamethylpiperidine or NaOH. The Gp. VIIIB element is associated with a carbonyl or halide gp. e.g. PdBr2. The oxidant is pref. air or O2 or a manganese diketonate. Used as a polycarbonate for moulding or forming into films, sheets or fibres or as an intermediate for such a polycarbonate. The yields of carbonate are greater under anhydrous conditions.
|
