PURPOSE:To enable specifications to be easily modified, by a construction wherein a controlling ROM storing a control procedure for determining a printing function, a font ROM storing a variety of font patterns and an external interface are provided in a cartridge-type substrate. CONSTITUTION:When a power source is turned ON, an MPU7 reads the control procedure stored in the controlling ROM9 in the cartridge-type substrate 30, and initializes a printing head driving circuit 4, a CR motor driving circuit 5, an LF motor driving circuit 6, the MPU7, an RAM8 and the external interface 11 following the predetermined procedure. Then, commands and printing data are received through the interface 11, are stored into the RAM8, from which printing information is read following the procedure stored in the ROM9, and in the case of printing characters, designated character patterns are read from the font ROM10, and each of the driving circuits is operated to print. Accordingly, the printer can be converted to host machines having different specifications by simply replacing the cartridge 30, and extendability is thus enhanced. |
