In a backrest, containing a U-shaped plastic shell (1), for a vehicle seat whose backrest side elements which are constructed as hollow profiles (5) are formed onto the central component (4), the deformation behaviour in the case of excessive stressing, in particular in the case of a rear-end collision, is to be improved. According to the proposal, for this purpose the hollow profiles (5) are each lined with a sheet metal reinforcement (11) which is open towards the centre of the backrest and is supported against the central component (4) by means of ribs (15) of a defined strength. <IMAGE>
