A process exists in which clay binder (3), expandable clay (coarse) (1) and water are mixed to give a mass, mouldings are formed from the mass and the mouldings are dried and fired to form the bricks. In this case, it is desirable considerably to reduce the water content, with equalised consistency of the mass. This is achieved by using a ground clay binder (2,3), providing an expanded clay (coarse) (1)/ground clay binder weight ratio from 0.8:1 to 1.6:1 and providing a solids/water weight ratio from 4:1 to 6:1. Bricks of sufficiently uniform consistency can be produced, and readily formable masses and sufficiently strong bricks are obtained. <IMAGE>
