A method for detecting the operating state of an actuator of a printer, in particular offset printer, the actuator having an electric motor which can be driven with an alternating direction of rotation and a gear arrangement, preferably a spindle drive, is distinguished in that the torque applied by the electric motor, or a variable dependent thereon, is determined and is compared with the torque, or the variable, which is present during the adjustment process of the actuator in a continuous direction, and in that the occurrence of the torque which deviates from the torque present during the adjustment of the actuator in a continuous direction by a prescribed threshold value is used as criterion for an operating state which deviates from the adjustment process in a continuous direction. As a result, the influence of a lost motion of the actuator can be determined or eliminated.
