Process for the preparation of a sulphurized, metal aliphatic hydrocarbon-substituted salicylate, wherein an aliphatic hydrocarbon-substituted phenol is sulphurized, and the resulting product is transformed into an alkali metal salicylate with an alkali metal hydroxide and carbon dioxide. The product thus obtained is optionally transformed in an overbased metal salicylate.
