PURPOSE:To increase closed circuit voltage by adding metal fine powder having lower ionization tendency than zinc to zinc which serves as negative active material. CONSTITUTION:Metal fine powder having lower ionization tendency than zinc and a mean particle diameter of 0.01-5mum is added to zinc. Thereby, the reaction area of zinc is increased, conductivity is kept, movement of electrolyte toward positive electrode is suppressed, and decrease in closed circuit voltage is prevented. Copper, silver, gold, tin, or lead is preferable as metal which has lower ionization tendency than zinc. These metals are amalgamated with mercury and increase hydrogen overvoltage to suppress gas evolution in a battery. Among them, copper, tin, and lead are more preferable from a viewpoint of workability and economy because these metals are oxidation resistant, not dangerous to catch fire when crushed to fine powder, and less expensive than gold and silver. |
