The side feeder described comprises a feeder part and a feeder foot which has the form of an essentially horizontal connecting duct between the outlet orifice of the feeder part and the casting-side feeder neck. According to the invention, the feeder foot is provided with an insulating and/or exothermic jacket. As a result, the feeder foot can be given a very thin and narrow shape, for example in that its diameter, based on the circular cross section, is smaller by a factor of 0.1 - 0.7 than the diameter, based on the circular cross section, of the outlet orifice of the feeder part. Compared to a full-size feeder foot of the same efficiency this results in a substantial reduction in the fettling effort required for separating the feeder from the casting, as well as in the cost of the return scrap metal. Moreover, in the case of side feeders it is now also possible, for the first time, to fit the feeder neck with a knock-off feeder core which has the known shape of a disc provided with a central hole and which forms a predetermined breaking point so that the feeder can be knocked off readily. Possible materials for said knock-off feeder cores include the traditional materials for knock-off feeder cores, but preference is given to refractory heat-insulating materials such as silicon dioxide, aluminium oxide, magnesium oxide, titanium dioxide, aluminium silicate and other silicates and mixtures thereof. |
