Method for testing coins for their weight, for limiting the maximum filling quantity of the coins inserted in the coin-guide channel and for testing and sorting out coins knurled in the edge region in self-service machines. The object of the present invention is to provide a method and a device for carrying out the method, in which too light coins (5, 6) are separated reliably, the particular coin inserted when the maximum filling quantity in the coin-guide channel (2) is reached is ejected, and knurled coins are not fed to the collecting device. This object is achieved by means of a rocker (9) projecting into the coin-guide channel (2) and having two extensions (12, 13) possessing run-on slopes, the extension (12) located first in the direction of insertion being pressed constantly into the same position by a spring (11). Too light coins, when they meet the slope (12), are deflected and are fed to the rejection channel. Whilst normal coins (5, 6) pass the said extension (12), at a specific filling quantity the second extension (13) of the rocker (9) is blocked by the coin last inserted. A subsequent coin is deflected via the extension (12), which no longer springs out, and is likewise fed to the rejection channel. Furthermore, a catch lever (20) projects into the coin-guide channel (3) in the region of the rocker and stops coins of identical diameter which are knurled in the edge region. <IMAGE>
