In a terminal of a telecommunication and especially telephone switching system, for example an operator's position, a storage space of a key memory is in each case permanently allocated both to the keys to which a function is permanently allocated and to the keys to which changing functions can be allocated. When a message arrives due to a particular operating state of the switching system or the operation of a key at the terminal, the storage area of a first memory, allocated to the relevant message, is activated which contains all functions for the current task. Using the key functions contained in the memory, a second memory and the storage space to which the respective key function is permanently allocated are activated. This space contains the address of the storage space in the key memory to which the key is allocated which is to be loaded with the relevant key function. This is entered in the key memory and becomes effective when the key is operated.
