For various reasons, it is desirable to control the level or level pattern of a useful audible signal (e.g. loudness-related control, compression, expansion). If these actions are carried out at the transmitting end, this may lead, for example, to loss of quality, or it is not even possible for reasons of compatibility. With the aid of a control system which operates with additional information which is obtained prior to transmission and transmitted in parallel with the useful signal, the control operations can be carried out continuously in the broadcast receiving device. The type of control and thus the purpose is determined solely by the transmitted additional information. With this control system it would then be possible, for example, to transmit additional information for compression of the useful signal. Broadcast listeners with the corresponding receiving module can activate the latter in the event of increased ambient noise (e.g. in a car), whereby the user no longer needs to carry out constant manual volume re-adjustment. As an extension of the control system, the broadcast listener can also be provided with the facility to manipulate the received additional information prior to its processing and thus adapt the control system according to his personal requirements.
