An antiserum or antibody against hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg antiserum) from HBsAg-immunised sheep, horses or goats, is described and can be used - in a form loaded onto latex particles - as diagnostic test system for hepatitis. The test system is highly sensitive and highly specific, i.e. very substantially insensitive to cross-reactions, and is suitable even for carrying out emergency diagnosis because it provides reliable results very quickly and without aids. The desusceptibility to interference by cross reactions, especially strong rheumatoid factors, can be further decreased by preceding the actual test by an adsorption stage with a suitable adsorption reagent.
